EMU STUDENT DIPLOMATS SOLVE WORLD PROBLEMS
A group of 23 EMU students traveled to St. Louis, Missouri with Prof.
Richard Stahler-Sholk (Political Science) from February 13-17 to
participate in the Midwest Model United Nations (MMUN) conference. In
this 4-day simulation of international diplomacy, they represented the
foreign policy positions of Qatar, South Korea, and Venezuela on a
variety of topics similar to those on the agenda of the actual United
Nations. Some members of the EMU delegations are taking the Model UN
course (PLSC 343), and some are members of the student organization, the
United Nations Student Alliance at EMU. After months of researching
their countries' positions and then long hours of multilateral
negotiations at the conference with delegates from universities
throughout the Midwest and beyond, they succeeded in passing resolutions
reflecting hard-won consensus on complex global problems. Their
outstanding performance was also recognized by six awards: Outstanding
Delegation in General Assembly Plenary (Venezuela), Fourth Committee
(Venezuela), Human Rights Council (Republic of Korea), and Security
Council (Qatar); and Honorable Mention for Third Committee (Venezuela)
and Counter Terrorism Committee (Qatar). Model UN is an excellent way
to learn through hands-on experience about global issues, the UN and
international organizations, foreign policy, negotiation and
conflict-resolution. For more information, contact Prof. Stahler-Sholk
at rstahler@emich.edu or club president Cindil Redick at credick1@emich.edu .

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING IN EL SALVADOR
Professors Judy Kullberg and Richard Stahler-Sholk (Political Science)
and Richard Douglass (Health Administration) have launched an
innovative
new interdisciplinary course sequence called "Poverty, Human Rights,
and
Health," for Summer 2008. All 3 professors will co-teach, and
students
will study on campus for most of the summer semester and then travel
to
the Central American country of El Salvador for the last 10 days. The
on-campus course is PLSC or HLAD 390, and the travel course is PLSC or
HLAD 391, with 3 credits for each course. This is a unique
opportunity
to explore the social and political structures that determine who has
access to basic services such as health care in any society, and to
consider the human rights implications and the political organizing
challenges of achieving social justice. El Salvador is still
struggling to rebuild its society and political system after the 1980-
92
civil war, and students will have the opportunity to meet with
community
organizers and social service workers there who are working to make a
better world. The early application deadline for the travel course is
February 15, but applications will be accepted until the program is
filled. Details and application forms are at
http://www.emich.edu/abroad/elsalvador, or you can email
jkullber@emich.edu orrstahler@emich.edu.

MOCK TRIAL SUCCESS, OHIO NORTHERN INVITATIONAL COMPETITION
Two Eastern Michigan University mock trial teams competed this weekend
at Ohio Northern’s Polar Bear Invitational. A total of 36 teams competed
from as far away as California, including teams from the University of
Michigan, Michigan State University, Case Western Reserve, and Notre
Dame. Eastern’s Team #386 ended up with a record of 5-2-1 with a sixth
place finish out of the 36 teams competing at the tournament. This
placement is somewhat understated, as out of a potential 280 points
awarded each round between Eastern’s team and their counterparts, they
lost one round by three points, one round by one point, and tied one
round. Eastern’s Team #387 finished with a 3-4-1 record, which is very
commendable given the competition at the tournament. Best Witness awards
were presented to Gregory Jones, President of Student Government, and
Ryan Johnson. (Only 15 awards were presented out of 216 students.) A
Best Attorney award was again won by Gregory Jones with a perfect score.
(Only 12 of these awards were presented out of 216 students) Eastern’s
next competition with be at the Notre Dame Regional Tournament on
February 23rd & 24th.
