The Club focuses on exposing undergraduates to the world of public administration by promoting and facilitating meaningful interaction between students and public administrators. This is accomplished through panel discussions, group interviews, and field trips to public institutions. Through this interaction, students will better position themselves for a career in public administration. The Public Administration Club also offers students the opportunity to receive personalized career advice and obtain information about new educational opportunities, such as internships and other volunteer opportunities. Contact Dr. Bethany Sneed for more information. Previous EventsLansing Field Trip: December 8, 2005 the PA Club went on a trip to Lansing. The students met the public employees in the following state departments: - Department of Civil Rights
- Department of Human Service
- Department of Community Health
- Department of Management and Budget
- Department of the Attorney General
At each department the students learned about the department itself, job opportunities, and the educational background necessary for employment. They were able to interact directly with human resources directors in the agencies and have all of their questions answered. Guest Speaker: Thursday, November 17, 2005 the club hosted guest speaker Mr. Alex Little. Mr. Little is the director of human resources for the Washtenaw County road commission. He has over 30 years of experience in public administration in such roles as City Manager, Economic Development Director, and Human Resources manager at the state and local levels. He has extensive experience with labor relations and union negotiations. Mr. Little gave a discussion about his work experiences and life as an employee in the public sector. He stressed the fact that what you do in a job as a public servant truly matters. Knowing that you can make a difference in a community allows for a great deal of job satisfaction. Discussion Panel: In April of 2005, the Club hosted a panel discussion with four prominent civil servants in the Southeastern Michigan community. The guest speakers included: - Robert Bruner, Ypsilanti Assistant City Manager
- Marie McKenna, Michigan Municipal League
- Kelly Remer, 3M, Traffic Safety Systems Division
- Christopher Smith, Chief Operating Officer of the Southeast Michigan Community Alliance
Each administrator held a master's degree in public administration and had extensive experience working with government and not-for-profit entities. The Club would like to thank each of the speakers for taking the time to share their insight and experiences with the EMU community. |
