| | | Pi Sigma Alpha: The National Political Science Honor Society Zeta Tau Chapter Eastern Michigan University In 1974, the Department of Political Science opened a Pi Sigma Alpha chapter for undergraduate students at Eastern Michigan University. In fact, one of the first inductees was Dr. Edward Sidlow - now a professor with the department. Former US Secretary of Transportation Rodney Slater is another early inductee of the Society. Today, current Pi Sigma Alpha members include Student Body President Robert Murkowski, as well as former Student Body President Edward Davis II and current Political Science Department tutor James Flick. Over the years the organization has hosted a variety of special events for the student body, including brown bag discussions with faculty, mock presidential debates, and high school outreach programs. Recently the organization co-sponsored several events for Constitution Day at EMU, including the simulation of a Supreme Court oral argument. Members also hold several social gatherings for political science students. On November 17th, Pi Sigma Alpha members are hosting a party at Frenchies for political science majors and minors, as well as the pre-law students. Students will have an opportunity to socialize with fellow students, meet professors, and find out more about the Department of Political Science. Pi Sigma Alpha is always looking for new ideas for programs to run for the benefit of political science students. If you have any ideas for brownbags, speakers, or other programs, please do not hesitate to contact Chuck Dryer, Chapter President, or Dr. Jeffrey Bernstein, faculty advisor. New this semester is a Peer Advising Program. Members of Pi Sigma Alpha will devote a portion of their time to advise their fellow undergraduates about graduation requirements, career options, and the benefits of studying political science. All political science students are encouraged to utilize this new and exciting resource. | Fall 2006 Peer Advising Schedule | | Monday | 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM | 601 Pray-Harrold | | Wednesday | 9:00 - 10:45 AM; 2:00 - 3:00 PM | 601 Pray-Harrold | | Friday | 12:00 - 5:00 PM | 601 Pray-Harrold | Membership in Pi Sigma Alpha requires one to be a major or minor in any of the political science department’s programs (political science, public law and government, public administration, and public safety administration), a GPA of 3.0 or higher both overall and in political science courses, and junior standing.
